Lawyers in the Government Regulation Practice advise across a wide range of environmental, health, and safety matters, including climate change, the contaminated land regime, health and safety compliance, renewable energy, and waste management.
The work covers transactional, regulatory compliance, and litigation matters. The practice advises clients on standalone project work, assists colleagues on corporate, finance and real estate deals, and provides advice and support to members of our international team.
Examples of recent transactions include:
- Biffa Waste Services - Advising Biffa Waste Services Limited in connection with a soil treatment facility (a joint venture with Biogenie), to cleanse contaminated soils for subsequent use in landfill relocation.
- Goodman - Advising Goodman in connection with a public inquiry under Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 in relation to contaminated land arising from bromide and bromate contamination involving La Farge, Thames Water, Crest, Three Valleys Water, and the Environmental Agency.
- 3C Waste Limited - Advising 3C Waste Limited, a subsidiary of Waste Recycling Group Limited, in a dispute with Mersey Waste Holdings Limited and Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority.

What is great about the Government Regulation Practice is the variety of work. It transcends all practices within the Firm. You can find yourself litigating one day and involved in corporate transactions the next, whilst simultaneously running environment-based property files. And then of course there is the standalone environment work, which is heavily based around Government Regulation. This is such a hot topic today, and it is therefore an exciting time to be involved in work in this practice.
As a trainee, you get good quality work and the opportunity to liaise with clients from the very beginning. It is this combination of diversity of work and responsibility at an early stage that makes Government Regulation enjoyable to practice in.
I have worked for one client on the purchase of a chemical company in administration, and the transfer of the environmental permits associated with that purchase, through to conducting research on the restrictions on the sale of products containing formaldehyde within the EU. What you do each day is very different, and that makes your working life all the more interesting.
